These expert divers are found in the Podicipedidae family. They are aquatic birds with long necks, white wing patches and pointed bills. Their bodies end in a fluff of feathers rather than a tail. The exception to the description above is the Pied-Bill Grebe, which has a chicken-like bill. They have lobed feet with flaps and submerge under the water quietly or leap forward when diving. They eat fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. They are known for their elaborate courtship displays.
